Problem with a panhandler? Call a cop

Don't confuse panhandling with
homelessness. Most panhandlers are not homeless but could
be begging money to support an addiction.
If you are accosted by an aggressive street person:
• "Withdraw gracefully
and call the police," said Ed Speedling, Project Home's
outreach director, who has spent years convincing hardcore
homeless to come into shelter.
Other advice:
• Never yell back at the
person.
• Don't advise the person
where to go or what to do with his or her life.
• Panhandlers are seldom
dangerous but should be ignored. Aggressive pleas should
firmly be answered, "Not today."
If a panhandler persists, it's time for police intervention.
"If someone is giving you a hard time or doing something
in a threatening manner, get away from that person if you
can," advised Cpl. Jim Pauley, police spokesman. "Walk
away quickly or run away. Yell for help. If you have a cell
phone, call 911."
• If you want to help someone
who is truly needy, save the change you'd otherwise give
the bum and donate it directly to a local charity or homeless
support organization.
