Ladysitting: My Year with Nana at the End of Her Century

Wednesday, December 4, 2019, 2pm

Penn’s Village is delighted to offer a presentation by Lorene Cary an American author, educator, and social activist (and Penn’s Village member).

Lorene Cary cherished memories from childhood of weekends spent with her indulgent Nana. Later, as Nana became a frail centenarian, Lorene and her family are tasked with a year of “ladysitting”. Lorene journeys through stories of their time together and five generations of their African American family. Brilliantly weaving a narrative of her complicated yet transformative relationship with Nana—a fierce, stubborn, and independent woman—Cary captures the ruptures, love, and, perhaps, forgiveness that can occur in family as she bears witness to her grandmother’s 101 vibrant years of life.

It’s a moving, sometimes funny, journey through secrets, lies, and epiphanies, one that millions of families make each year, as they struggle together to share life--and face death.

Lorene Cary is author of the memoir Black Ice, three novels, and one book for young readers. She founded Art Sanctuary and SafeKidsStories.com, teaches at the University of Pennsylvania, and has written a one-act opera of Ladysitting. The New York Times recently published her opinion piece about caring for caregivers. AlsoLorene Cary’s play, My General Tubman will be premiering at the Arden in January.
